Sacred Rest

Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity by Saundra Dalton-Smith, M.D.

Rest… Who doesn’t crave more rest? Do we ever get enough?

In Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity, Saundra Dalton-Smith suggests that rest is more than sleep. Much more. And as a busy mom and board-certified internist, she should know. She maintains that we can recover our lives, renew our energy, and restore our sanity. But if we hope to do this, we must first identify our specific types of rest deficits and then apply the appropriate remedies. She helps with that by offering a simple Personal Rest Deficit Assessment Tool at the end of the book, but recommends the reader do that first. She asks six questions about each type of rest-deficit, allowing the reader to jump right to their most urgent need.

Seven Types of Rest

Dalton-Smith identifies seven types of rest: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, sensory, and creative. She devotes a chapter to each one, featuring a vignette of a person lacking this type of rest and how to recognize that lack. She follows this with scientific research (in lay language) and then application. Her tone is gentle and inviting. I felt like she was reaching out to me with open arms as she shared examples from her life and work. Her medical perspective adds depth without overwhelming the reader.

Resources

To supplement her helpful book, Dalton-Smith offers additional resources at her website IChooseMyBestLife.com, including an emailed daily Sacred Rest Challenge that rotates through the various types of rest. It’s a good reminder of what we learned in the book.
